Free Parking in Napier

Parking doesn't have to cost a cent if you know where to look. Napier's CBD is mostly metered or pay-and-display, but there are plenty of free spots just a short walk from the action. Here are the best ones we know about.

Caroline Road (Ahuriri)

One of the best-known free parking spots in Napier. Caroline Road runs alongside the Iron Pot area in Ahuriri and has unrestricted, all-day parking with plenty of space. From here it's a flat 10-minute walk along the waterfront into the Ahuriri village for cafes, bars, and the harbour. Great option if you're exploring the coastal walkway or visiting West Quay.

Nelson Crescent (Ahuriri)

Tucked along the waterfront near Perfume Point, Nelson Crescent has free, unrestricted parking with views across the harbour. It's a short walk to the Ahuriri strip, the coastal pathway, and the inner harbour. Fills up on sunny weekends but usually has space during the week. A relaxed spot to leave the car and wander.

Marine Parade (South End)

The southern end of Marine Parade beyond the main shopping strip has free angle parking right along the beachfront. It's unmetered once you get past the Soundshell area heading south. Perfect for a beach walk, the Pania of the Reef statue area, or a stroll through the Sunken Gardens. The further south you go, the more space you'll find.

Milton Road and Surrounding Streets (Bluff Hill)

The residential streets climbing up Bluff Hill, like Milton Road, Lighthouse Road, and Thompson Road, are all free and unrestricted. Park here and walk downhill into the CBD in about 10 minutes. Bonus: the Bluff Hill Lookout is nearby if you want to take in the panoramic views on the way back to your car.

Clive Square Area (Time-Limited Free)

Some streets around Clive Square and the outer edges of the CBD have free parking with time limits, typically 60 or 120 minutes. These aren't metered, but you'll need to check the signs. Handy for a quick lunch or errand run without paying. Look along the side streets just off the main Emerson Street strip.

Westshore Beach

If you're heading to the beach rather than the shops, Westshore has free parking right by the sand. There's a car park at the end of Charles Street and more parking along the esplanade. Great for a swim, a fish, or a walk along the old Ahuriri Estuary path. You can walk into Ahuriri village from here in about 15 minutes along the waterfront.

CBD Meters After Hours

Most of Napier's pay-by-plate meters in the CBD are only enforced during business hours. Outside of those times, the metered spaces become free. This makes streets like Herschell Street, Tennyson Street, and Hastings Street great options for evening dining, late shopping, or weekend plans. Always check the signage on the meter for the exact hours in that zone.

Tips for Parking in Napier

Pay by Plate meters: Napier's CBD meters are pay-by-plate, which means you enter your licence plate number at the meter and pay for the time you need. You can pay with coins, PayWave, or the ParkMate app. If you move to another space in the same zone, your credit carries over.

ParkMate app: If you do end up in a metered spot, the ParkMate app lets you start and stop parking sessions from your phone. No coins needed. There's a 30-cent transaction fee per session.

Time limits: Some free spots still have time restrictions (like P60 or P120). These are enforced by parking wardens, so check the signs before you leave the car.

NCC parking maps: Napier City Council has downloadable parking maps for the CBD, Ahuriri, Taradale, and other areas showing exactly where the free, time-limited, and paid zones are.
